Why this must be read:

I like this story because we get to see a glimpse of Kowalski's life before he began working undercover. Not only do we hear about his relationship with Stella, but we also learn what kind of cop he was before the 2-7. In "Eclipse" Fraser recites Ray's commendations so we know he's a good cop, but that's the last we hear of it. This is an interesting story about the plight of a queer cop in Chicago, and the way that Ray works to help other homosexuals. There's great use of Stella, Sandor, Tony and even Ray's parents to give Ray's life pre-Fraser a more rounded feel instead of just "loved Stella, lost Stella, pined for Stella" the way a lot of stories are. Also, the Fraser in this story is the playful and hilarious side of him that we see so rarely on the show, and his interactions with Ray are spot-on.

Fraser was throwing stones and pieces of pottery, and Ray jumped up and took aim and fired, and Dief slammed into the artists with about a hundred pounds of wolfly fury, and suddenly there were two beret'd artists down on the ground, holding their shattered hands in front of their throats while Dief snarled at them.

Score.

"You'll never sculpt in this town again," said Fraser, and Ray had to try to handcuff the guys through dying of laughter.

Run, don't walk, to this one, folks.
