Why this must be read: I couldn't resist making this my last rec for the month. A huge crossover AU, starring not only Nsync and Backstreet, but various other popgirls and boys. Justin and Lance are new arrivals in the city, and meet the rest of the guys at the local gay drop-in center. Lucy often describes this as her activist!AU, but that doesn't do justice the scope of the world she creates. The relationships (romantic, platonic, familial - of all kinds) are the heart of the story. Things don't always work out, and sometimes bad things happen to good people, but this definitely rates as comfort fic for me, I love to re-read it.
Book 2 of the Centre is still in progress, but Book 1 has a nice sense of closure. The first 76 of 83 parts (I said it was huge) are linked to off the site below, and the last few are easily found in her fic journal. You won't regret immersing yourself in this world. While events and characters have much more resonance for popfans, I think people unfamiliar with the fandom would enjoy it too.
"I can bring some coffee, if you want," Lance said. "I just got a job at Starbucks."
"Oh, my god," Chris said, grasping his hands. "Please come back. Please keep coming back. Do you have a boyfriend? I know a lot of guys who would - "
"Chris, shut up, you're scaring the boy," Joey said. "And you're scaring _me_, too."
Justin was laughing. He stood up and picked up his backpack. "I have to go to work, too. Lance, are you coming?"
"I don't start my shift until noon," Lance said. "I could look at those computers now, if you want."
"Absolutely," Chris said. "I'll show you the wonders of our back room. What?" he asked, when everyone looked at him. "Look, you can dust him for fingerprints afterwards, okay? Sheesh."
