Why this must be read:

There are two stories within one here. One takes place in the Third Age when the twins are young, the other starts when Elrond is young and goes up until the end of the First Age. It's a great introduction to the Silmarillion for those who haven't read it and fills in the gaps for those who have. It's also the story of Elrond and what makes him the way he is. Nilmandra also writes lovely Elrond angst and there are several moments that will make you cry.
