Why this must be read:
The title reflects the literal winter outside the house Myron and Zeke share, and the figurative winter inside Myron’s soul. I think this story will resonate with people who have lived through difficult experiences.
Vietnam’s behind him and Myron knows he ought to be happy. But “it feels like I missed a window of opportunity here,” he thinks, “to be who I was supposed to be when this whole life started.”
Lt. Goldman’s made it back to The World – or has he. While the ending leaves room for hope, no miracles occur in the course of this story. Zeke doesn’t fuck Myron back to mental health. Myron isn’t necessarily going to be saved by the power of love.
“Feels sometimes like we lived too long, like we've done our tour, not just in the war, but in life. . . and it's hard, it's really hard to think about all the years there are left to live,” says 23-year-old Myron.
