Why this must be read:
Johnny indulges in his favorite past-time: driving his roomie nuts. Myron retaliates. They fight! They fuck! Rinse! Repeat! It ain’t love, but it sure is fun.
The story opens as our heroes are enjoying some well-deserved down time in their hooch. Johnny’s got a girlie magazine. Myron’s reading Dostoevsky. The situation deteriorates as rapidly as you might expect.
There is some very nice characterization in this story. Such as:
“Myron settled down again, settled back into that world where words flowed through his mind in colour and sound, like a movie. Johnny thought often and often that Myron flew high in his own mind if he managed it nowhere else.”
And
“It killed him to admit it but McKay had wall to wall charisma. Some kinda PhD in being handsome and wonderful. He flew high above it all, while Myron skulked, sweated and stunk in the weeds.”
