Why this must be read:
It has been a few years since the Season 4 aired, but I know that there are new folks to the fandom, so I will place my comments behind a cut tag for S4 spoilers.
In Terra Firma we are introduced to John's little sister Oliva and get a name for his older sister, Susan. We met one, but not the other, although we did meet Susan's son, Bobby.
Why? Why one sister and not the other? What kind of relationship did John have with his older sister, so that she wasn't around, but allowed her son to be?

farscapefriday, Cranky took this barely mentioned character and created a 3-D person in 350 words. Reading her take on Susan was a revelation to me. Not just as an answer to my 'whys' about Susan, but for the insight into what being 'the oldest' means. It was an attitude and mindset I couldn't understand (I'm the youngest child), but I am sure one that my eldest sibling could. For me this was a window into a world I could never live in, but finally, just a smidgen, understand.
