Knuckle Down by Propaganda (NC-17)

Why this must be read: Even though I haven't read a lot of the Outsiders or early Teen Titans, there's something about the dynamic between Roy Harper and Dick Grayson that appeals to me. This story picks up on recent comic canon (Nightwing 109/110), but the heart of the story is about how relationships change/stay the same. Dick's drifted away - literally and metaphorically - and Roy goes hunting for him. When he finds him, they can't talk about what's going on, but they still manage to connect -- with fists ... then other body parts. The whole story is edged with darkness and violence. With things held back. With the need to hang on to something, and the unsettling realization that sometimes you don't know a moment's passed until it's too late to do anything about it.
Roy sees Dick's eyes widen suddenly, and then half a second later realizes he's left Dick's hands free. He moves to grab at Dick's wrists but is much too slow. The air rushes out of him as Dick shoves his fists up and under Roy's ribcage, and Roy is catapulted over Dick's head. He lands with half his weight on his injured hand, which has taken too much punishment. His wrist collapses under him and he lands hard on the pavement, and then Dick's on top of him, thighs squeezed tightly against either side of Roy's abdomen when he leans forward and pins Roy with an arm across his throat.
"You don't have to be a son of a bitch about it," Dick says hoarsely. He gives him the same dirty little smile Roy had felt cross his face earlier, and Roy chuffs out a laugh. Blood spatters across Dick's cheek and his smile twists into a grimace as he lifts his arm to wipe off his face. It takes Roy a split second to lunge upward, grab two handfuls of Dick's hair and yank him down. The kiss hurts, and Dick's mouth is as bloodied as Roy's is. They're biting at each other's lips and tongues, trying to hurt each other even more.
