S.W.A.T. --An Overview

I kind of didn't realize that I would be pledging a sorority this semester, so I don't have much time to do this, so this is a little rushed. I didn't have time to do individual character bios, but the important information is in the summary (which is exceptionally long winded).

Let me know if I missed anything.

[Summary]
"An arrested drug kingpin is transported by a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team led by Jackson's character out of the city and into federal custody. Plans go awry when the kingpin offers $100 million to anyone who can free him." (from IMDB.com's SWAT page)

Of course, there is a lot more to the movie than that, especially since 'One Hundred Million Dollars!' isn't screamed until about the halfway mark. The movie opens up with a SWAT team responding to a hostage situation at a bank. Among the team are partners Jim Street (Colin Farrell) and Brian Gamble (Jeremy Renner). When Gamble disobeys a direct order --saving the day, but wounding a hostage in the process-- both men are demoted to working in the gun cage -- basically, the lowest job while still being in the department. After Gamble leaves Captain Fuller's office, Street is offered a chance: say it was all Gamble's fault and he can stay on the SWAT team. Jim refuses. Gamble doesn't want to be in the gun cage, he thinks it's bellow them, so he breaks up with Street decides to leave the force, begging Street to go with him, but he refuses because he's not willing to throw away everything. When Gamble leaves it's not exactly on good terms.

Cut to six months later. Street is in the gun cage battling DR. Pepper product placements, when Sgt. Dan 'Hondo' Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) is reassigned to SWAT to build a 'young, kick ass' team. He does so, while making Street drive him around. The team includes current SWAT officers T.J. Macabe (Josh Charles) and Michael Boxer (Brian Van Holt), and new comers David 'Deke' Kay (LL Cool J) and Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). Hondo, after fucking with Street, invites him to become the last member of the team. Street agrees,

Fuller isn't a fan of Hondo or Street, and has issues with Sanchez because she's a woman (she could so kick his ass), so he agrees to the lineup, saying that if they fail Hondo and Street will be off the force and Sanchez will be knocked down to writing parking tickets. So, this is the driving force behind the team's training montage: fail and they'll all be happy. They learn to work as a team (there is some tension between Street and Boxer --Jim dated Boxer's sister, and Boxer is concerned that Jim hurt her feelings, also, Boxer thinks Jim betrayed his partner in Fuller's office, which he didn't), and pass their final test with flying colors (maybe breaking a record for the course, though that may be a joke).

The next day is when the shit hits the fan and the good guys realized they have arrested Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez) a drug king pin on a minor charge. The SWAT team is called in to escort the man to jail. After a small gun battle (small for this movie anyway) Montel shouts his offer of 100 million dollars to anyone that can get him out of jail. No one takes it that serious until the helicopter they plan on using to escort Montel to prison is shot down by non other than Brian Gamble (though they don't know this yet).

From there, it's a chess game. Gamble knows their moves and has a very complex plan on how to help Montel escape. They know Gamble knows everything they've been trained to do, and as a result, it's a very complicated chase that ensues, once Gamble gets Montel out of their custody --with the help of TJ who can't resist all the money Montel promises. Boxer is shot during Montel's escape from custody, much to TJ's dismay.

The end is a wonderful sequence of stunts including a plane landing on the 5th Street bridge, said plane being pretend from taking off by Hondo's wonderful limousine driving, and ending with a fight between Jim and Brian. The fight ends with Brian dead and Jim in need of a Band-Aid. Meanwhile, on the bridge, TJ first asks if Boxer will be okay (he will) then shoots himself in the head.

It ends with Montel safely in jail and our heroes going off to fight more crime.

[Pairings]
There are a two big pairings in S.W.A.T. fic.

1) Jim Street/Brian Gamble -- There is so much subtext in there relationship, in the looks the two of them give eachother, it's hard not to see this as a pairing. Particularly slashy scenes are the fight in the locker room (it really does seem like a break up in many ways) and the scene were Jim and Brian meet again in the bar (anyone catch the 'naughty' things Brian was doing to the pool stick?). And who can pass up such an angsty pairing?

2) Jim Street/Chris Sanchez -- Jim is shameless in his attempts to flirt with Chris, he even asks to come back to his house after the bar. He also is concerned enough to stop chasing Brian and look back at her to see if she's all right after she gets shot during the final gun battle. He does, however, hold a lot of respect for her --at least, seems too, suggesting she take a key role in their test-- and we all know she could give him a run for his money --physically or mentally.

There are a few others: Jim/Deke, Jim/TJ…basically Jim with anything with a hole (to be overly graphic), but those are the two big ones.

Does anyone know if anyone is writing S.W.A.T. fic featuring the tv series characters (Robert Urich as Jim Street, Rod Perry as Deke, etc?)
