The Meaning of Marriage by Gigi Sinclair (PG)

Why this must be read:

"It was hell being married to James Wilson."

That's how Gigi Sinclair's story The Meaning of Marriage starts. It ends with one of the most perfect last sentences I know, and one of the most ironically painful.

This is not, as you might think, a story about Wilson's actual marriage. Instead, it is about the marriage-like commitment between House and his best friend, brought into stark relief for House during a period when Wilson is staying at his apartment. In its portrayal of that quirky friendship, it's an often hilarious story. But on a deeper level, it is also about each and every one of Wilson's relationships, about the warmth of his tenderness and the impermanence of his attention, about the things that make him a wonderful husband and the things that make him a horrible one. And it is about unspoken, perhaps unrequited love. In short, it's one of my very favourite House fics.
