This is my last rec for House here on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. It's been a pleasure introducing you to my favorite recent fics and vids. Hopefully we won't have to wait quite so long before someone else volunteers to drive!

And when you leave feedback, make sure to tell 'em that you arrived via the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van!

Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: House/Wilson, references to House/OFC
Length: one-shot
Warnings: Hand jobs, references to drug and alcohol abuse, brief references to S&M, scat and auto-erotic asphyxiation.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mercycroft41
Author Website: Author's Fic on LJ

Why this must be read:

Mercy definitely qualifies as a new author as she only posted her first House fics to comms about a week and a half ago. They are not perfect - she is unapologetic about Briticisms, and anachronisms appear as well - but she brings a unique perspective to House/Wilson fandom that has everyone excited. This fic in particular features a fresh, original House voice that is a little chilling but totally believable in its rapidfire switches between his current case, his past experiences, and his real-time sensations. Like poor Wilson, you may not be quite sure what hit you.

Vidder: masterble
Musical artist: Harry Belafonte
Pairing: Ensemble
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jlk_lumberjack
Vidder's website: masterble's YouTube Channel
Why this vid kicks ass:
Masterble/[livejournal.com profile] jlk_lumberjack made only a handful of House vids before moving on to apply her brilliance to The Big Bang Theory, but three of them make it into my top five. I don't even know how to describe this particular vid, which crops up as a fan favorite whenever polls are taken. Let's just call it a hilarious crack vid structured around the conceit that Hugh Laurie is the big banana* of the House set.

*no, I don't mean top banana. Really.

Vidder: petitecuriosity
Musical artist: Garfunkel and Oates
Pairing: Sam/Wilson, hints of House/Wilson
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] petitecuriosity
Vidder's website: petitecuriosity's YouTube Channel
Why this vid kicks ass:
[livejournal.com profile] petitecuriosity occasionally bemoans the fact that she doesn't have access to editing software of the desired degree of sophistication, but in my opinion she more than makes up for this with the creativity of her background track and story choices. In this vid, she sets the tension of the House/Wilson/Sam triangle against the perfect song ("Me, You, and Steve"), and hilarity ensues.

Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Musical artist: Harry Chapin
Pairing: Gen
Vidder's website: daasgrrl's House vids
Why this vid kicks ass:
This is one of those vids that makes you smack your forehead and go, "It's so obvious - why didn't I think of that?" Although even if you had, it probably wouldn't have been quite this awesome. I can't describe this better than [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl does in her summary: "In the beginning, there was Sherlock Holmes. And Holmes brought forth the brilliant doctor House, embodied by the lovely Hugh Laurie. Who prior to that in Fortysomething played a slightly less brilliant doctor, Paul Slippery, who begat three sons, the eldest of whom was played by the equally-lovely-if-somewhat-peculiarly-named Benedict Cumberbatch. Who of course grew up to play Sherlock. And the Universe looked upon its work and pronounced it good. And then my head exploded."

Why this must be read:

One last fic from [info]jezziejay - this one much more typical of her House/Wilson writing, which is to say, hilarious, daft, and a bit sappy. It was written in response to a pic prompt challenge on [livejournal.com profile] sick_wilson and creatively ties all five prompts together into one funny fic. (The bit in the bowling alley literally leaves tears of laughter running down my cheeks.) Full disclosure: I beta'ed this.

Author Website: Author's Fic on LJ

Why this must be read:
This is the fic that finally won over many of my House/Wilson friends. In this fascinating departure from her popular Sharkverse, [livejournal.com profile] stenveny shows us how House's impulsive green card marriage following his break-up with Cuddy could lead to something real after all. There are a number of great fics out there that give us a delightful Dominika, and this is one of my favorites - she's clever and spunky and sweet and pragmatic and hilarious. Especially in light of the way Season 7 actually ended, I really appreciate the hope and humor offered by this AU version.

Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: House & Wilson friendship
Length: ~1300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] blackmare_9
Author Website: Fic Index on LJ

Why this must be read:

I'm making an exception to my new-fics-by-primarily-new-authors mission today for one of my favorite fics. [livejournal.com profile] blackmare_9 is probably best known for Down to the Water, one of the most beloved House & Wilson friendship fics ever. This story is much shorter but also treats the relationship between these two men in the aftermath of crisis with great understanding and compassion. Set during House's stay at Mayfield, it uses the lyrical, luminous language of dreams to explore House's complicated feelings about Wilson, Amber, and his father. And the title is absolutely perfect.

Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: House & Wilson friendship
Length: ~1400 words
Warnings: Suicide attempt. Also off-screen death of Sarah (Wilson's cat).
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] menolly_au
Author Website: No separate page or tags, but most of the entries on [livejournal.com profile] menolly_au's LJ are fics.

Why this must be read:

While perhaps not initially very well-known outside of [livejournal.com profile] sick_wilson, [livejournal.com profile] menolly_au quickly became one of my favorite authors in the House fandom. She exhibits a deep understanding of the characters and a terrific knack for keeping them both sympathetic and in-character - no small feat at times, especially given the canonical developments of recent years. "Accidental" is a superbly plausible look at what Wilson's reaction to the devastating events surrounding the Season Seven finale might have been. Wilson's voice recounting his actions and experiences hits exactly the right note of detachment, and the reconstruction of his friendship with House via actions not words is handled perfectly.

Length: 4354 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] barefootpuddles
Author Website: Author's Sick!Wilson fics

Why this must be read:
Though fairly new to the fandom, [livejournal.com profile] barefootpuddles has become one of the pillars of [livejournal.com profile] sick_wilson, a House community dedicated to the emotional and physical suffering of everyone's favorite oncologist. It was tough to choose just one of her fics - her personal favorite is "Groundhog Day," and "Eight Nights" is also very popular. But I've decided to go with "Antifreeze," the fic that first grabbed my attention, probably in large part because it had everything I could want: in-character dialogue, an honest-to-god differential diagnosis (for cold), and House and Wilson ending up in bed together.

PSA: By the way, it's never too late to tell an author how much you like their work! Feed it forward!

Title: A Rum Thing Indeed by Maineac
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maineac

Why this must be read:

Shows with actors in common lend themselves naturally to crossovers, and one of the strategies authors often take is to have one of the characters discovering the other while watching television. What makes this ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] maineac stand out is the hilariously in-character dialogue by Jeeves & Wooster as they confront the puzzler of an American doctor who bears a certain resemblance to Bertie's Uncle Jimmy.

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] cuddyclothes is one of the reigning queens of House/Wilson crack, witness her contributions to "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and the "Gangster Paradise" chain fic. She also has a keen eye for the cliche in both canon and fanon and, as in many of her House post-ep fics, she skewers both mercilessly in "Epic Fic Is Epic." Every hoary House/Wilson trope is here, from Wilson's Sudden Discovery of Being Madly In Love With House After Twenty Years to my personal pet peeve, the Oncologist/Diagnostician Dichotomy.

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] srsly_yes has given us some seriously epic AUs including the Blood Brothers 'verse and Karma on the Mississippi, but I've decided to rec my favorite of hers, a short, funny story that she wrote in response to [livejournal.com profile] deelaundry's post-7X12 "You Must Remember This" challenge: House gave Wilson ten days to "get back into it." What happens when the ten days are up, if Wilson doesn't? It turns out that Wilson's new companion, Sara, is everything that Wilson could want in a woman. And more.

Fellow lovers of cats, in-jokes, and terrible puns, this crack fic's for you.

Length: 18,380 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yarroway
Author Website: Author's Fic on LJ

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] yarroway writes a wonderfully in-character established House/Wilson relationship, with all of the complications one might imagine, but underlying all, a fundamental loyalty and love. In this fic, House's unresolved feelings about his family are stirred up when his mother asks him to come home to visit his father's gravestone, and you may find yourself alternately giggling and tearing up as Wilson works to figure out what is going wrong with their relationship and what, if anything, he can do to fix it.

To steal borrow unabashedly from one commenter, "I'm honestly not sure if this is good because it hurts so much, or if it hurts because it's so good. Either way, it's wonderful."

Pairing: Lucas/Cuddy, between 'Broken'  and '5 to 9'
Length: ~4500 words
Author on LJ: [info]readingrat
Author Website: Author's Fic on LJ

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] readingrat has written a number of epic fics - several loosely based on the plots of works by Shakespeare and Austen, and a more recent series called When the Wind Is Southerly in which she offers an alternative explanation for the inconsistencies of Seasons 6 and 7 that will have you laughing and wincing by turns. But I've decided to recommend the first fic of hers that grabbed my attention, an insightful study of the complicated House/Cuddy relationship from the POV of Cuddy's hapless would-be husband Lucas Douglas. I love how she allows Lucas to elicit both sympathy and revulsion as he compares himself to House while recounting his own ultimately futile campaign for Cuddy's heart.

Author's Summary: Lucas knows he's fighting House for Lisa. What he can't fathom is why, when he's won every skirmish and the odd battle so far, House should be winning the war.

Why this must be read:

This author has produced just a handful of fics for the House fandom, but I still had trouble deciding which one to share. I chose "Measured violence and tenderness" in part because the very title captures one of the common threads that draw me to [livejournal.com profile] emilys_list 's fic: the complex, sometimes even contradictory motives and emotions that drive the interactions between House, Wilson, and Cuddy - the cruelty of one moment highlighting the unlooked-for kindness of the next. It's funny and sad and screwed-up and in-character and incredibly hot.

The original House fandom overview by [info]butterbuns can be found here. This one is current through the time of posting (mid-Season 8).

Why you should watch this show, in a nutshell:
House M.D. is utterly addictive and often brilliant, with whip-smart banter, quirky characters, compelling medical mysteries, and excellent acting, particularly from its three main leads. Although the quality and consistency of the writing has dropped off considerably in the past few years, the first three seasons could be considered television drama at its best.

Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: House/Wilson
Length: ~6000 words
Author on LJ: [info]cellista_in_c
Author Website: Author's tagged fic on LJ

Why this must be read:

Only a very special kind of fan could watch "The Dig," an episode that doesn't even feature James Wilson, and be inspired to write a glorious exploration of almost fifteen years of his friendship with Greg House and its eventual transition into something more. [livejournal.com profile] cellista_in_c is that kind of special. It's just too bad that we didn't get to see many more fics from this author, although she did make some wonderful contributions to the collaborative pieces on [livejournal.com profile] h_w_chainfic.

Her first major House/Wilson story, "The Lights Are Shining (Any Place But There)" features terrific in-character banter as well as evocative little details that really make the reader feel like she's right there with the two men as they tramp around muddy fairgrounds and encounter their first spud gun competition. The way that the author weaves in the unexpected events that prevent House and Wilson from pursuing their plans to win the next one together is nothing short of brilliant. And the last section is lovely and poetic and hot as hell.

Why this must be read:

If there is one thing that House/Cuddy shippers and the rest of the House fandom agree on, it is that the romantic relationship between Greg House and Lisa Cuddy as portrayed in Season 7 was thoroughly unsatisfying. Fortunately, a talented new author took matters into her own hands by writing an enormously popular House/Cuddy series set parallel to the events of canon. Deriving its name, the Sharkverse, from the third story of the series, this appealing alternative to the Shoreverse is still going strong.

29th-Feb-2012 11:45 pm FALLING SLOWLY by jezziejay (PG)
Hello again! This time around I'll be driving the crack van for House M.D., one of this month's featured fandoms. Having been relegated to small fandom status, House hasn't come up in the rotation since May 2010. So I'm making it my mission to highlight some of the best new works (and in many cases new authors) that have appeared in the meantime. I'll mostly be focusing on House and Wilson fics, but you can expect gen, slash, and other pairings too.

And without any further ado...

Fandom: HOUSE M.D.
Pairing: Gen
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jezziejay
Author Website: Fic Page on LJ

Why this must be read:

The scene in which House jumped from his hotel balcony into the pool in the Season 7 episode "Out of the Chute " inspired a veritable flood of post-ep fics from the House/Wilson community, many of which have been collected here. But I'm highlighting a story from one of the hottest authors to hit House fandom in recent years, [livejournal.com profile] jezziejay. Known best for her frank and hilarious take on the House/Wilson relationship, [livejournal.com profile] jezziejay is actually an amazingly versatile author, capable of producing the fluffy and sweet or the stunningly sad with equal aplomb.

Full disclosure: We are mutual betas. But I was as shocked and awed when she posted this gut-wrenching fic to [livejournal.com profile] house_wilson as anybody.

Why this must be read:

I don't usually go out of my way to seek out crack fics, but the author's summary caught me because I realized, as I read it, that I could SO ENTIRELY RELATE LIKE WHOA:

"At some point I realized that all my favorite shows had the same main character: someone supernaturally brilliant and tortured who could analyze anybody in a second, have the complete scoop on them and see them coming from a mile away and hence never be taken off guard or bested. I wondered what this said about me. I also wondered what it would be like to stick them all in the same room..."

All four fandoms are given equal weight, so if you're aware of at least two of them, I highly recommend checking this hilarious little concept out.

Why this must be read:

A filk masterpiece modeled after BtVS's "Once More, With Feeling" (or for the Discworld nerds, "Vunce more, vith feelink!") This was the first filk I've ever read, and I have to say that none of the others I've plundered have quite managed to live up to its brilliance. With a wave of the cheerily sadistic DEM's (Deus ex Machina) hand, everyone in Princeton Plainsboro is forced to sing along to 17 fully reworked songs as they go about their business, whether they like it or not. House, of course, is extremely unamused, Wilson dances along (or at least tries to), Cuddy directs everything with a rather bemused air, and the Ducklings 1.0 turn cartwheels as they diagnose. Songs reveal what mere words can't say, though: when House's undertones of pain and distrust  sound, there's always Wilson by his shoulder to back him up, and eventually, the melody turns.

Why this must be read:

While I like House/Cuddy/Wilson, it's hard to find a fic that manages to mesh these three enormously different (and at first glance, contradictory) personalities in a way that doesn't clash. Throw in kids, and well, normally it's a complete disaster: uneven, jarring, and just plain annoying. This fic, though, is the perfect example of how House/Wilson/Cuddy should be done. Love, friendship, heartbreak--the three adults remain perfectly in-character throughout, no matter what twists life may bring.

Length: 42k

Author Website[livejournal.com profile] ignazwisdom
Why this must be read

One of the classics of the House/Wilson fandom is A Modest Proposal (yes, I'm sneaking in a double-rec here), and as a sequel, Involuntary Commitment lives up to (and possibly exceeds) its predecessor's brilliance. The two fics are an alternate take on the Tritter arc way back in season three, and Involuntary Commitment begins with House in a rehab facility. However, there're no music box miracles here: House has to claw for every inch of progress he can, while trying to hold together his life and his relationship with Wilson at the same time. The setup is similar to "Broken," but this fic is unfettered by a two-hour time limit and instead meticulously picks House's flaws apart and examines them in a way that "Broken" never did. Of course, hot phone sex never hurts, either. XD

Pairing: Taub/Rachel
Length: 1,815 words
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] rubyjuly
Why this must be read: This takes place during House's time at Mayfield, and his overwhelming absence becomes a presence of its own, shown here looming huge and silent above the life of Taub.

There aren't many stories out there that explore canon from this character's viewpoint, which is a shame because he's so interesting -- a precariously balanced person, familiar with failure and sadness, hopeful and guarded, and all those things come through so poignantly here.  More than that, the damage and fragility of other characters comes into sharp focus through Taub's subtly-cracked lens.
