I, Janitor by Dot (PG)

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Flash/Supergirl (implied)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dotfic
Author Website: Fiction Archive
Why this must be read: I'm taking a few liberties for my last two recs. The DC universe is large and unwieldy. It spans more than 60 years of comics, various movies, television series, cartoons, etc. I've tried where possible to concentrate on recs based in the comics, but so many writers blend canon from both toons/comics that it's very difficult to stick purely to comics canon - besides, all the toons and movies spin out of the comics at some point. (Justification over.) If you only read particular pairings or comic fic or whatever, make this your month to try something new.

So, I'm rec'cing a fic set squarely in the Justice League (cartoon) canon. It's an outsider's view - a janitor at the Watchtower - and it really works. You get to see the superheroes from an ordinary man's POV. You get a more human view of them, and Dot's got a knack for both character and comedy. It's one of my favourite JL fics, and I'd be amiss not to rec it given the opportunity. She's continued to use the janitor character in a number of fics as well.

So what is this very important job my youngest thinks of so highly? I'd like to be able to say that I save the world for a living, but I don't. Where I work there are people who do, though. It's the kind of place that just being there, even when nothing's going on, is amazing. In my line of work it gets quiet and then you can hear the hum of the life support systems. The corridors are shining clean, half-lit, totally empty while my own footsteps echo back at me, and if I look out a viewport I can see so many stars.

Oh yeah, I'm a poet.

Well, no. I'm not a poet and I don't save the world. Unless putting up a "Wet Floor" sign counts as saving the world, which my wife says does, because what if Green Lantern slipped on the wet floor, hit his head, and couldn't go out and save people?

It's one way of looking at it, I guess.

My territory is in Watchtower Main, level seven, corridors A, B, plus hangar two. I mop the floors. I'm the janitor to superheroes. Sorry, *environmental engineer.*
