Oubliette by Lee the T. (PG-13)
Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Author on LJ:
leethet
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:
Now, come back to slash before I got slashed myself! (I mean flogged with a "cat o'nine tails" by irrated and frustrated LJ users). Though, actually, this story is not slash, in the common (fanfictional) sense of the word, not even noticeably slashy or pre-slash, but the accent put on the sentimental relationship of the partners is so strong that I really cannot think about it as gen. It's fine with me since I always favored ambiguity and mixed genres.
Lee the T has already so many (well deserved) recommendations in
crack_van that I first intended to choose a less popular story and a less known author (since my aim was always to propose a choice as wide as possible) but, eventually, I considered I couldn't leave this one outside. It was one of the first ten stories I read in MFU fanfiction and I kept a fond and vivid memory of it, because of his emotional impact and angsty suspense. I am also a sucker of "partner disparition" story, if such a category does exist.
I am not going to give more light about the plot; it wouldn't be wise. Just think: What are you still able to remember when you have forgotten everything...almost?

Gen vs Slash
Thanks for the rec, Francis!
And the reason "Substance XX" isn't anywhere else is Mara did a gorgeous PDF file of the story for me and we distributed that version to anyone who wanted to read it -- and will still happily do the same if anyone wants that lovely version. She did a beautiful layout with photos, etc. If you'd like,

Re: Thanks for the rec, Francis!
I wanted to write more about the story but it was late and I was half asleep in front of my keyboard. So I thought your name was a sufficient advertisement.
It may be surprising to you that I classified "Oubliette" among the slash stories but I was concinced, had I labelled it "gen", that all the newcomers would have skipped it, while there was everything (except sex scenes) which makes (for me) the appeal of slash (deep feelings, progression of the relationship, psychological insights, and so on...)

Re: Thanks for the rec, Francis!
I didn't feel you exactly classified "Oubliette" as slash -- you indicated, it seemed to me, that it felt that way, rather than was that way. Of course my gen's been called slashy and my slash genny, though I certainly have a firm (if narrow) dividing line between the two in my head, and don't intend any slashy vibe in my gen stories. The constant is the trust and affection between the guys. :)
substance xx
This story I remember as one of the first mfu stories I read - a delight to revisit it today. I generally prefer long stories - always a good read when you are curled up indoors in bed, relaxing in the afternoon.
And substance XX, by any chance, could I get a copy too, pretty please?

Re: Substance XX
You did mention once your interest in Harry Potter. Sorry; I've yet to read one of the HP books. I'd be lost in that fandom. I suspect you did it proud, though.
When I saw you on the S&H LJ, I wondered if that was ancient history or perhaps something new. Glad to hear you're writing them. I wonder where I might find your work to date. Are you in zines or online? I'd love to see what you've done.
I've taken my first shot at writing fiction, and chose to do it in the S&H fandom -- still a word I hate, for some odd reason. Since starting to scribble, working with a small group of wonderfully supportive "domineditrixes," I now wish I could hop in the time machine and go back to be a better "beta noir" to you than I was. I cringe when I think how ham-handed I was! Thanks for putting up with me!
Re: Substance XX
S&H is my "new" love (though of course I watched the original run of the show and loved it then). You've friended me there: I'm
You weren't ham handed at all. An intelligent edit always helps any writer (although I don't bother with betas in HP or S&H -- too lazy).
