Oubliette by Lee the T. (PG-13)

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] leethet
Author Website: Unknown

Why this must be read:

Now, come back to slash before I got slashed myself! (I mean flogged with a "cat o'nine tails" by irrated and frustrated LJ users). Though, actually, this story is not slash, in the common (fanfictional) sense of the word, not even noticeably slashy or pre-slash, but the accent put on the sentimental relationship of the partners is so strong that I really cannot think about it as gen. It's fine with me since I always favored ambiguity and mixed genres.

Lee the T has already so many (well deserved) recommendations in [livejournal.com profile] crack_van that I first intended to choose a less popular story and a less known author (since my aim was always to propose a choice as wide as possible) but, eventually, I considered I couldn't leave this one outside. It was one of the first ten stories I read in MFU fanfiction and I kept a fond and vivid memory of it, because of his emotional impact and angsty suspense. I am also a sucker of "partner disparition" story, if such a category does exist.

I am not going to give more light about the plot; it wouldn't be wise. Just think: What are you still able to remember when you have forgotten everything...almost?

Hey, I'm not frustrated by the gen stuff. It's been great fun reading it. I can enjoy a good slashy story, but it's not a requirement for me. Good plots are a lot harder to find!

I love Lee the T's stuff because she pays attention to the plot. Have you read Substance XX? It's just wonderful but it doesn't seem to be posted anywhere other than her livejournal.

Gen vs Slash

I read both, but I'm not a big romance fan. I love good plots, good characterizations, good writing, wit, action, danger, and all that. I find that more often in gen than slash, so I've been loving this month's recs. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the rec, Francis!

"Oubliette" was my very first MFU story. :)

And the reason "Substance XX" isn't anywhere else is Mara did a gorgeous PDF file of the story for me and we distributed that version to anyone who wanted to read it -- and will still happily do the same if anyone wants that lovely version. She did a beautiful layout with photos, etc. If you'd like, [livejournal.com profile] moorspede, I can email it to you (it's just an Adobe pdf, so if you have Adobe Reader (it's a free download if you don't have it yet), you can see it as it's meant to be seen *g*). If you'd like a copy (or if anyone else would), my email address is at my lj. Drop me a note and I'll ship you a copy. :)

It had been so long since I'd read this, it was like reading it for the first time. And as usual, she doesn't disappoint. Thanks for reccing this, Francis. It made for a lovely morning read.

If your email addy's at your lj, I'll ship you a copy of Substance XX.

I didn't feel you exactly classified "Oubliette" as slash -- you indicated, it seemed to me, that it felt that way, rather than was that way. Of course my gen's been called slashy and my slash genny, though I certainly have a firm (if narrow) dividing line between the two in my head, and don't intend any slashy vibe in my gen stories. The constant is the trust and affection between the guys. :)

Oooooooooh, yes. Oubliette.

This story I remember as one of the first mfu stories I read - a delight to revisit it today. I generally prefer long stories - always a good read when you are curled up indoors in bed, relaxing in the afternoon.

And substance XX, by any chance, could I get a copy too, pretty please?

Well, hello there, my old friend! What a pleasure to trip into your space and hear you saying nice things about that collaborative effort -- one on which I'm afraid I dragged my heels for an unforgivably long time. The story (like all your stories) is well worth the reading. I was honored to have been able to add a little something to the visual experience. I have some catching up to do, I see. The last time I looked, you were only just beginning to tackle MFU fiction, teaching everyone new tricks, and now, here you are, at the top of everyone's must-read list, just as I predicted! I shouldn't be surprised; after all, it's well-known that MFU fans have impeccable taste. Drop me a line one of these days: mara_snh@yahoo.com

So now you're on LJ! I wondered when I saw you on my Starsky and Hutch LJ if that could by any chance be you, but I didn't want to ask, just in case you were undercover. :) I'm afraid I've neglected MFU in the last couple of years to focus on Harry Potter fanfic and, lately (neglecting Harry Potter) Starsky and Hutch (though I've only finished one short and one proper story). I'll never give up my love of UNCLE, though.:)

Nope -- in from the cold. I decided to let MFU think about itself for a while without me to distract it, althoug, like you, I'll never say never to NS and IK. In fact, I spent all tonight alternately re-reading Oubliette and cooking dinner. I still find it hard to believe that it was your first. It's such a full realized story. Elegant.

You did mention once your interest in Harry Potter. Sorry; I've yet to read one of the HP books. I'd be lost in that fandom. I suspect you did it proud, though.

When I saw you on the S&H LJ, I wondered if that was ancient history or perhaps something new. Glad to hear you're writing them. I wonder where I might find your work to date. Are you in zines or online? I'd love to see what you've done.

I've taken my first shot at writing fiction, and chose to do it in the S&H fandom -- still a word I hate, for some odd reason. Since starting to scribble, working with a small group of wonderfully supportive "domineditrixes," I now wish I could hop in the time machine and go back to be a better "beta noir" to you than I was. I cringe when I think how ham-handed I was! Thanks for putting up with me!

Well, Oubliette was my first MFU fanfic. It certainly wasn't the first thing I ever wrote! :)

S&H is my "new" love (though of course I watched the original run of the show and loved it then). You've friended me there: I'm [livejournal.com profile] librathree. My 2 and 1/2 stories (so far) LJ. :)

You weren't ham handed at all. An intelligent edit always helps any writer (although I don't bother with betas in HP or S&H -- too lazy).
