The Game

Harsh Realm was a virtual reality training program created by the army in order to test the outcomes of different large scale attacks on the United States. The first program that they ran was a suitcase nuke set off in the middle of New York City. The beginning of the simulation went perfectly, until they got a glitch.

The Glitch


General Omar Santiago. Santiago was one of the most decorated officers in the United States Army. Unfortunately he wanted to be a dictator. So he hijacked Harsh Realm and took control of the only exit out of the place. He then set about creating Santiago City along the Eastern Seaboard and went about taking over the rest of the country. The government didn’t take too kindly to this as they’d spent quite a bit of money developing Harsh Realm and wanted it back.

The Solution
Send in as many soldiers as it takes to assassinate Santiago and “win” the game.

The Players

Lt. Thomas Hobbes

Just a month before leaving the army Hobbes is dragged away from his fiancé and comfortable bed in the middle of the night. He’s sent into the Realm and only after arriving there does he learn that he can’t leave. Florence also believes him to be the person destined to free the Realm. Hobbes is determined to get home to Sofie and end the game, a goal that can annoy Pinocchio to no end.

Mike Pinocchio

Pinocchio was also sent in to kill Santiago. The only problem was that Pinocchio decided that he liked Harsh Realm and joined up with Santiago’s team and became rather high ranked. Through some events that the show never got the chance to explain Pinocchio ended up leaving Santiago’s ranks with a warrant out for his arrest. Before entering the Realm Pinocchio was severely injured and lost one of his legs as well as sustaining some rather bad scaring over a good portion of his body. This shows up in a number of fics and is without a doubt his reason for staying inside Harsh Realm.

Florence

Florence is a character of Harsh Realm. She’s a healer and mute. Little is known of Florence’s past except that she used to belong to the Sisters. A group of women healers, also mute, that travel through the Realm. The Sisters are also pacifists and Florence clearly loves her guns which is the only explanation we got about her expulsion from the Sisters and her joining up with Pinocchio.

Sofie Green

Sofie is Hobbes’ fiancé. When it became clear that Hobbes wasn’t going to kill Santiago anytime soon the government declared him dead and his body too mangled to have an open casket funeral. Sofie is devastated, especially as she just recently learned that she was pregnant. After Hobbes’ funeral she is approached by a woman claiming to know that Hobbes is alive and offering to help her out. Thus begins Sofie’s quest to find Hobbes. Sofie is not well liked by a majority of fandom and it can be reflected in the fic.

Inga Fosa

Not much is known about Inga. She’s helping Sofie out, but she also works with Santiago. It’s also highly likely that she’s working with the government. Pinocchio used to be her lover and the circumstances surrounding their separation is unknown, much like Inga.

The Fandom

The fandom used to be really active. It's somewhat died as of late. Small amounts of activity can still be found though. There used to be a newsgroup, alt.tv.harsh-realm, for Harsh Realm but I have no idea if it's active anymore as my current ISP doesn't support newsgroups.

HRfic
This is the Harsh Realm mailing list over at Yahoo! Used to be where everyone hung out, could use a bit of revitalization. Although a good portion of the general craziness that happened here can be found over here at Welcome to the Realm: Life on HRfic.
hrfic_insanity has recently been created in the hopes of resurrecting the HRfic group. Stop on by and say hi.

hr_fic
This would be the only LJ community that I can find for Harsh Realm. It's got a smattering of fics and is just begging for some attention.

Hasn't been updated since July of '03, but it's where you can find most of the fic.

I know I've missed a few sites, but I don't have links to everything. There's about a dozen fics over at The Pit of Voles and I know that some people have attempted to start up message boards recently. Unfortunatly I don't have the links for that.

And oh man, this brings back memories. Harsh Survivor...are Paternity and all the round-robin "parties" we had still out there too? *grin* Man, HRfic was a one-of-a-kind experience, that's for sure...I should enjoy this trip down memory lane enormously. ;-)

since I just picked up the dvds like last week and have been having the best of times rewatching. (And am now convinced the Lost gang really got plugged into Harsh Realm and Locke is a big ol' liar cause it's just Omar screwing with a new bunch...) The Pinocchio love has returned en masse...*sighs happily*

Alas azarsuerte didn't manage to drag pimp me into Harsh Realm right before it petered out (last I recall there was a baby shower and me, her and a few others were trapped in the mall in a hostage situation? *wry grin*) but oh such good memories. I'm looking forward to seeing what you rec! Hell, I might end up getting into writing it again. *resists temptation*

I heard there's polar bears wandering around on that island. (I don't watch it, I live under a rock) That sounds like a messed up sub-routine of the Realm if I ever heard one.

Haven't had a chance to read much of the post here. This is great! I was sort of a late comer to the HRfic list serve. I love it, and still intend on finishing my "Reset" story. Life has just been extremely busy the past 2 years with getting married, moving to UK, getting a new job, etc.
