Why this must be read: Like all the best of the Five Things stories, this fic illustrates how changing one decision or event can change the entire shape of the characters' lives. In this story, we see five possible futures for Dan Rydell, all of them very believable and utterly compelling. When I first read this story, I screamed out loud. (I won't spoil you and tell you why here.) I also printed the story out so that I could read it over and over on my commute. (I almost never print stories out, but I just had to.) This story is heartbreaking, exhilarating, sad, hilarious, sexy, wistful and stellar in every way. In other words, it's Shrift.

Read it, and love both Shrift and Danny more than you thought possible.
