Why this must be read: Dark, sad, hopeful, tragic, and rather touching - the concept transcends a mere hook-up. This one kicks you in the teeth right out of the gate, and spends the rest of the story putting what's left back together, slowly, living up to the title's Chinese namesake of 'healing effect'. The interaction is top-notch, and Mal's POV busts my little heart. The voices are perfectly post-BDM, flowing naturally with nary a halt, and heartbreakingly tender with the aches and pains and battle scars - of both Miranda and of the events within the story itself.

He slept at some point and she was gone when he woke, but after he cleaned up and dressed he found her easily enough, hunched over the dining room table and tapping lightening-fast in Simon's pocket encyclopedia. "Morning," she said without looking up, and he stared at her. "We waste fuel."

"We...do?"

"We do," she agreed gravely. "But I'll fix it."

"You will."

She nodded, dropping the encyclopedia to start scrawling numbers on one of a number of scraps of paper scattered in front of her. "I'm revising the navigation protocols by taking more variables into account and using more precise data. I've already saved us an entire fuel cell over the next fifty years."

Mal shook his head and decided he needed coffee before he could make heads or tails of her. "That's impressive, I suppose."

River finally looked up at him, and he was relieved to see that her eyes seemed clear and focused as she favored him with a small smile. "Every little bit helps, Captain. Keeps us flying."

And he couldn't help but smile back. "Can't see that you're wrong there. Have at it, then."

It was easy after that; she made it that easy. She eased the burden of his guilt by being the same as ever, by having her together moments and her crazier spells as regular as he'd come to expect, by finding her bizarre ways of being useful and by causing all kinds of trouble in the meantime.

By shooting him sweet smiles when he was least expecting them, and by never talking about any of it.

Wow. That's not even a pairing I read much of normally, and it knocked my socks off. Thank you for the rec!
