Why this must be read:

Because it's slow and beautiful and elegant. But there's an underlying awkwardness to the three of them - even as Aragorn and Arwen reach out to Boromir, there's an underlying tension - a separateness that can't be breached no matter how close they become. This is an Aragorn and Arwen who have a real, long history together. They're close, they fit - the piece both starts and ends with them alone with each other.

Read it for the moments. Because this is Aragorn, Arwen and Boromir at Rivendell, and although the inevitable cannot be halted, it can be put off - for a little while at least.

"How will he fall?" he whispers back, both desiring and dreading the answer. Arwen's eyes narrow in concentration, then she shakes her head quickly, dark river of hair swishing around her shoulders and then cascading back into place. There is a dreamlike quality in the motion and in the stillness of the night around it.

"I don't know," she replies. "It is not certain. But I fear the Ring may be too strong for him."

"I fear that for all of us," Aragorn confesses. Arwen turns toward him, eyes glowing brightly in the starlight.

"No," she says with certainty, "not for you. If you were to face it, you would triumph."
