Why this must be read: One of the reasons I find Stark such a fascinating character is because we know so little about him. Canon gives us intriguing hints and tidbits about his people and his personal history, but leaves us with more questions than answers. This story fills one of those gaps beautifully by showing us a very young Stark being initiated as a Stykera. It not only gives us a believable portrait of Stark as a child, it also fleshes out the Banik culture and its Stykera mysticism in a well-realized way that captures the feel of a genuine shamanic tradition very nicely.

"There is something you will have to do soon, Bren," Karsh said. "It is my duty to prepare you for it."
Bren fidgeted. "Why?" he asked.
"Because it is the way of things." Karsh answered, "And you have no choice."
Bren said nothing. How could he answer that?
"The headaches you've been having, the voices you've been hearing, the visions you've seen...all these things are signs." Karsh looked up at the sky. "You are changing. You have been chosen by the Goddess."
"But I don't want to change," Bren interrupted.
Karsh looked back at him. "I know, child," he said. "But you can't stop it. You are changing, and you will have to adapt. If you do not," he paused, letting that sink in, "You will die."
Bren's eyes widened, and the familiar prickling chill of fear ran through him. "Die?"
"Yes." A small smile curved Karsh's lips. "I know it is hard, but it is not all bad, Bren. When you Change, you will become more powerful. You will have senses that others do not have. No one will ever bully you again."
"Not even Raud?"
"No," Karsh chuckled, "Not even him." He put a hand on Bren's arm. "But first, you must be Initiated. You must be Opened. I cannot do that for you. You have to do it yourself." Karsh looked back at the sky. "And it will not be easy."
