Why this must be read:
For my last ENT rec I wanted to rec a Reed/Sato story. They're such a popular pairing and they have the potential to work really well together, so I thought it was important to do at least one rec in this category. I've already recced a nostalgia fic, though, so I went looking for a Reed/Sato fic by another author that was really representative of the two characters individually while at the same time showing how well they work together as a pairing.
I tried, I really did, but in the end I kept coming back to Etymology. This is absolutely my favorite Reed/Sato fic because it captures both characters' personalities so well, while at the same time showing the flaws in both of them that could draw them together. This fic works so well within canon that you can believe it's actually going on behind the scenes (if Reed would quit flirting with Trip, anyway) and Hoshi's voice is so wonderful and sweet and smart that it's easy to hear her in your head as you read.
nostalgia does the best job of any writer I've seen at incorporating Hoshi's job into the kind of person she is, letting it inform the way she thinks without overwhelming the character underneath. I hear she claims to be incapable of not writing angst, but this fic leaves you with that sort of warm, happy feeling without ever being sentimental or cloying. I can't think of a better example of Reed/Sato anywhere in the fandom, and that alone is the best reason to read this fic.
