Why this vid must be viewed: This is actually my favorite vid ever. It's everything I love about TOS (and the movies) summed up with a great song. The editing is fantastic (as is true of all Reese's vids) and the flow is incredible; it's a real tribute to the original crew and their adventures.

Summary: Spock convinces his father to move to Earth after refusing to bond with T’Pring. The consequences of this change the dynamics of his family and sets him on the path that will lead him directly to James Kirk.

Why this must be read: Keira Marcos is a pretty polarizing author in fandom. Personally, I think she writes crack. Magical, addicting crack. And since that's what we're here for, I'm rec'ing her only Star Trek series, Tangled Destinies. I'll warn off the bat for overpowered!Kirk, but Keira is an amazing author so if you don't mind (or enjoy) that kind of thing this is a must read series.

Basically, Spock and Kirk meet when Spock and his family move to Earth instead of staying on Vulcan when Spock is a kid. What follows is a lengthy romance, some interesting political manoeuvring, and many adventures.

While there is more to come in the series, the first arc is completed and can stand as-is.

Summary: Doctor Bashir, marooned for over six months, is discovered by the Enterprise. Starfleet counted him dead. Section 31 made sure of that. Can he get his life back?

Why this must be read: One thing that intrigued me about DS9 was the idea of Section 31, but the show didn't really show the possible ramifications of such an organization existing - it was touched on, but kind of abandoned. This trilogy takes (in my opinion) a more realistic viewpoint on what they would have done to Bashir after they attempt to recruit him. It also lets us see how other characters in the ST universe would react if they found about about Section 31's existence.

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/Battlestar Galactica
Pairing: Mostly canon pairings
Length: 156,591 words
Author Website: Rap541 (fanfiction.net)
Summary: What do you do when you're a lost Starfleet officer in the Beta Quadrant? You blend in and hope for the best.

Why this must be read: This story is amazing. It's well-written, well-plotted, handles both sets of characters brilliantly, and includes a ton of background from both series to make the crossover work. You can also read this with minimal knowledge of either show without getting lost.

Basically, one of the characters on the Battlestar is really a very lost Starfleet officer, trying to get home. Once he does, however, things don't really go as expected.

A warning - chapters 65-67 (the last 3 chapters) are really a prequel. They can be read either before or after the main story, it just depends on whether you enjoy being thrown into the story in media res or would prefer a slow buildup. Going Native also has a sequel, which is an ongoing WIP.

Summary: 14 year old Jimmy Kirk must fight against the forces of Kodos the Executioner!

Why this must be read: This fic is 100% my headcannon for the events on Tarsus IV, which is brought up in the TOS episode The Conscience of the King. It's an action story, an adventure, a teen-aged romance, and a great sci-fi story for anyone reading, regardless of previous TOS cannon knowledge. It explains a lot about the Jim Kirk we meet later on in his life, and I highly recommend it to anyone, regardless of their taste in Star Trek.

Length: 20,000 words

Summary: A brilliant, but unstable Federation engineer visiting DS9 becomes frighteningly obsessed with Doctor Bashir, the one person on the station she feels understands her. Set in the third season.

Why this must be read: I love everything Ysone's written, and I recommend all her stories. This particular story, Tincture of Madness, reads like it could be a real DS9 episode. The characters are great, the plot is realistic (for Star Trek, anyway), and the writing is very engaging. The story does focus on Bashir, but everyone plays a role.

Why this must be read:

The characterization. For having amazingly in character voices that it feels like an extension of TOS.

The fic deals with the aftermath of the TOS episode "Plato's Stepchildren". It's an excellent, introspective and perhaps a bit haunting character study and a first time story from Kirk's POV. Like the author, I also remember being unsettled when I watched this episode and the implications of what happened in the episode forms the crux of this story. The author captures Kirk's voice showing both his emotional intelligence as well as his all too human flaws. And Spock is characterized perfectly as are the other characters (Bones, Uhura, Chapel and even Alexander). I loved the fact that Kirk knew he was being selfish, of Spock's shame and anger at having his control taken, the way the repercussions were dealt with, the tender breaking down of barriers between Kirk and Spock, and the nuanced details. Well-written, well-paced and definitely worth checking out. Highly rec'd!

Pairing: Scotty/Uhura, Spock
Length: 1555
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

One of the things that I love about Star Trek is that while we do get to see the characters at their prime going on deep space missions and being heroic and diplomatic across the galaxy, we also get to see some of the characters' waning years as well. The notable example being Ambassador Spock.  This piece takes place after Bones' funeral where Scotty, who was stuck 75 years in a transporter buffer, runs into Spock.  It's bittersweet and heartbreaking and [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose does a wonderful job of capturing Scotty's and Spock's voices. The grief is palpable and Scotty's love for Uhura shines through.  The sublte details about the scenary, Scotty's inner thoughts and observations of Spock are all a lovely touch.  The fic is somewhat episode related so having knowledge of the TNG episode "Relics" is great but not required.

Why this must be read:

For the sheer brillance of the plot, which is both well-crafted and spins the much-loved "mind-meld" trope in an absolutely sinister way.

Summary: "Something...was wrong. Jim wasn't sleeping. Wasn't eating. And those dreams...those goddamn dreams...A Love Story."

I was on the fence about reccing this because on the one hand it is a phenenomally well-put together and well-written story but on the other hand it's not a story for everyone.  It's comes with a bunch of warnings, which you should read if you have any sort of triggers.  But if not, keeping the caveat lector warning in mind, read it without the warnings.  The twist towards the end comes across more shocking.  It is exactly what it says in the summary...a love story...just a very twisted one.  And as most commentators have stated it's a complete mindfuck.  It's a wretchedly devastating read and the idea...the plot (in retrospect so incredibly simple) is like a punch to the gut...but it's well worth the ride.

Fandom: STAR TREK REBOOT
Pairing: Leonard McCoy/Jocelyn McCoy
Length: 2264
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] boosette
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

For her painfully tragic and realistic description of the breakup of the McCoys marriage. And because it's a gorgeous piece of writing.

I've read some amazing remixes in the reboot ST fandom and this story is one of the many examples.  It's a remix of [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock's Love is a Losing Hand (which is also wonderful) and [livejournal.com profile] boosette takes the piece and turns into a journey from the very beginning to it's painful end in a precise and at times poetic way. The realism though is probably why I really enjoyed this story.  I could see people I know in the voices of Jocelyn and Bones. People who fall breathtakingly fast into love and those who slowly grow apart because of time and work or something else. People who stay on because of duty or the for the sake of their child thinking that it will get better or somehow they can endure it.  And [livejournal.com profile] boosette manages to convey all that perfectly in a few snippets.

Length: 23,055
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] what_alchemy

Why this must be read:

For her amazing characterization of T'Pring and Stonn and description of Vulcan culture.

Summary:
When Stonn goes into pon farr, T'Pring must break her bond with Spock, which has unforeseen consequences. But that's not where their story starts.

I can't even express how much I adore this fic. Gorgeously written, switching between when Spock was younger to present day where he's suffering from the break in the bond with T'Pring. There is so much subtle detail and beautiful imagery that it almost felt tangible. The portrayal of the relationship between a younger Spock and T'Pring to T'Pring's and Stonn's relationship and then Kirk and Spock...it's just perfect. It's easy to paint T'Pring and Stonn as the enemy and very few writers are able to write them as normal individuals with their own thoughts and dreams which is exactly what [livejournal.com profile] what_alchemy does in On Restless Pinions.  Just fantastic characterization all around.  I also loved Vulcan in this story, where it makes its presence quietly in the background as if it's part of everything that it's like almost a living presence.  IMHO, this is one of the best stories to come out of Star Trek Big Bang 2011.

Fandom: STAR TREK:THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~18,000
Author on LJ: n/a

Why this must be read:

For her Kirk voice.  He is an extension of who he is in The Original Series.  Very few people are able to navigate between the various contradictions that is Captain James T. Kirk, and UKJess really captures his voice.  She manages to discuss and highlight his insecurity, arrogance, bravado, and even his empathy and intelligence all within this story.  It simply is an amazing character study.  The reactions of the various members of his crew as well such as Bones, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, etc also feel very in character.  I almost felt as if I was watching a TOS episode.  I also really liked how the tension was built up and finally how the resolution came about in the end.  Almost as if something was broken and put back together but yet was not quite the same.  Just lovely!

The basic summary of the story is Kirk, Bones, Spock and some members of his crew get taken hostage by a enemy empathic species.  And Kirk starts to break apart in front of his crew.  How the crew deals and reacts is the basis of the story.

Why this must be read:

Pretty much what the summary says: "Kirk and Spock play chess. On and off the board.  Or, the one in which Spock stealth-marries Kirk. Because Spock's sneaky that way."

I know the "chess equals foreplay" analogy has been done quite a bit in the fandom but this is a delightful read, scorching hot, with so much UST and full of witty humor.  Saucery has such a lovely, precise way with words and she does a fantastic job of building the mood of the scene.  The banter between Kirk and Spock is so much full of win (I did mention the UST right?) and I love her characterization of Spock in this.   Highly Rec'd!

Short, intense, and set in Mirror!verse, this little fic packs a punch. It's about Pike and Number One and what they were...what they could have been shown through the lens of the Mirror!verse we saw in TOS but tempered with feelings of sorrow, loyalty, and love. Note that Mirror!verse warnings apply, so tread carefully.

Untitled is a response to a kink!prompt for McCoy and Chapel to have sex in the middle of an emergency, with the first part of the story showing a "missing scene" from the battle in the movie, and the second part dealing with the aftermath of both the battle and that moment. While sex is obviously a key aspect of the fic, it is the Chapel and McCoy's characterisations, and the emotions and stress behind their reactions to the battle, that will stay with you, after. Beautifully written.
