Why this must be read: Here's another story that was written for the Common People challenge, and it provides superb insight into why people would want to follow Tom Zarek, and whether that allegiance is blind or riddled with doubt. It's also equal parts disturbing and hypnotic as you get a glimpse of what life may be like for a prisoner at the end of the world.
When you hear the girl scream, you don’t run to her rescue. You don’t worry about what these monsters who have become your brothers (in arms, if nothing else) might be doing to her. You don’t even flinch because Zarek hears about these things, and it’s dangerous to make Tom Zarek angry.
When the boy points a gun at Zarek, you don’t pray that he’ll shoot. You don’t think that the world (or the fleet, all that’s left of the world) would be better off with Tom Zarek dead and gone. You don’t think that this boy, bloody and shaking as he is, is stronger and worth more than Tom Zarek has ever been. You watch Zarek stare back at him and wait for him to decide his fate and yours.
