Why this must be read:

Because it's the polar opposite of the last fic. Because it's the perfect illustration of why Avon/anybody is doomed, but especially Avon/Cally. Because even though there's no detail and nothing explicit, the sex is painfully real.

The bunks in Liberator were generous for one occupant, sufficient for one and a half, and inadequate for the comfort of two. This, thought Avon, would logically lead to Vila and Cally's immense popularity as bedmates, were anyone else on the ship as rational as he. Perhaps he was, in this case, fortunate they weren't.

Despite his companion's optimal size for sleeping beside, the bunks still provided no additional margin for sexual activity preceding that sleep. They were surrounded on three sides by heavy gray polymer walls, against which he had bumped his elbow twice in trying in to remove Cally's tunic, sending pain shooting down his ulnar nerve. She had knocked her shoulder as she rolled under him, which he thought meant that next time either she should stay on top or they ought to insert themselves into the bunk in the correct order to begin with, preferably already undressed, and he told her so. She looked as though she might laugh, but merely said all right, rather kindly.

Because it's a short, brutal, lovely gut-punch of a fic, just the kind redstarrobot is best at. Because you don't know whether to end up hating Avon or pitying him. Because in the end, you might just do both.
