Why this must be read: A dark action/drama that borders on a horror story, this story features mutants who would ordinarily be in violent conflict with each other banding together to try to fight off the Shadow King, who holds various of their friends in his telepathic thrall. Scarily intense, this story doesn't make the mistake of most "enemies work together" fics and make everyone play nice together; several times the allies nearly kill each other. This is a very early X-Men fanfic from the beginning of the fandom, and has some rough edges, as most of the stories from those days did, but it is still powerful and moving.
