Well, I'm hoping not to spam, but with one hour left in the month and one rec left, if someone doesn't post something in the next ten minutes I'm going to end up posting three in a row. Sorry about that, folks. It's my 13th and last rec for the month. I apologize again for having to get these in frantically at the last minute, but this has been quite a month.
This rec is slightly unusual. It is not a WIP -- it was finished years ago -- but the author's web site went down, and then every copy of this story disappeared off the Internet. I have all of it and am restoring it to one of my archives, but so far, I've only gotten the first 9 of 18 chapters done and uploaded. I expect to be finished by the end of the weekend, so I'm going ahead and reccing it, because it's worth it.
This is a huge, sprawling epic of a story, featuring dozens of characters from all over the X-Books as well as original ones, which starts off with the infamous Trial of Gambit and Rogue's abandoning Gambit in Antarctica, and continues as an AU from there. Legacy Virus, Genosha, love and death -- this one has it all. Excellent characterizations, the ability to define everyone as an individual despite the huge size of the cast, and a plot that will keep you turning pages (well, clicking links, but you get the idea.)
Ororo whirled on her heel and strode into the empty kitchen where Rogue perched on the counter. "What," she demanded in an imperious tone, "Were you *doing?*"
"You weren't *there!*" Rogue replied, trying to keep her voice even, but failing. She was truly upset; that Mississippi twang was more prominent than usual. "Ah trusted him, an' he betrayed me. Betrayed us all, Ororo! He ...he..." she stopped, swallowing a sob in her throat. *He broke mah heart*, Rogue thought, but didn't let those words past her lips.
"And he is not the first X-Man to have had a dark and checkered past, child. You of *all* people should know that. I was a criminal. *Logan* has done heinous things in his past. If I, if he, if you could change, why could not he? Tell me, Rogue - if you knew of these memories, did you not also know of Remy's feelings with regard to them?"
"Ah was goin' outta mah mind!" Rogue protested in a shrill voice, gloved hands running through her hair. "His feelin's an' thoughts was runnin' around in mah head an' makin' me crazy!"
"As did those of Carol Danvers when you stole her permanently. As did the other residual thought patterns in your head on various other occasions after use of your mutant ability. But when it happens with the man you profess to love, you do not look deep inside those, to see what LeBeau's true feelings on the topic are? You dare not examine them? Tell me...Did you consider whether he truly is sorry for his behaviour? Or did you merely condemn him in a self-righteous rage?"
Rogue glared furiously at Storm, opening her mouth again. "Hank an' Warren an' Betsy ain' stop me," she pointed out. "They must've thought ah was doin' the right thang."
"Or they did not know precisely what it was you were doing until it was already done," Ororo replied in a tone of voice that made quite clear the level of her disappointment. "That man saved my *life*, child. I would have died as a small child a dozen times over, without him. He has been part of this team for all this time. His actions have spoken volumes. While there was always the chance he would turn colors on us, we took that risk on him, knowing he was a thief and a reprobate.
"We took the same chance on a hysterical child whose dual psyche was destroying her. That same child was a criminal...a known mutant terrorist, I might add." Ororo stared at Rogue until the younger woman dropped her eyes in shame. "And on Sabretooth. We have been wrong, and we have been right. Did we condemn poor Madelyne for falling under Sinister's thrall?" You are not leader of either team, and the decision was *NOT* yours to make!"
Crimes of the Heart
And that's a wrap. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the fic!
