Why this must be read:

Frodo/Merry is one of the greatest "minor" pairings of LOTR hobbitfic fandom (and, for reasons having nothing to do with the books, also one of the most embattled); after all, consider the devotion that must have led Merry to leave his life as the heir of the Master of Buckland to accompany Frodo into the unknown. One of this pairing's foremost proponents and most splendid writers is [livejournal.com profile] abby_normal, and her story "Interlude", turning on the axis of Merry's care for Frodo and propelled by his dynamic approach to problem-solving, is a prime example of what this pairing has to offer and a tasty sample of [livejournal.com profile] abby_normal's vigorous, tactile, evocative writing.

"Interlude" is part of the ongoing series "Counterpoint", but first stood on its own, and I'm reccing it here as a solo story.

Not that Frodo would actually allow Merry to see him crumble, oh, no, not ever and Merry thinks a little bitterly on rivers and boats and relatives with all sorts of good intentions but not a single clue between them.  But he’s quite certain that, if Frodo knew Merry were standing here behind him, those shoulders would not be shaking and that head would not be pressed to the door as if he’d like to push himself though it and follow after Bilbo.

Ruby, I'm so glad you dropped me a line about this. What great things for you to say and I'm pleased and grateful that you still think enough of this one to recommend it. You've done some wonderful Frodo/Merry yourself and it's doubly special to get something like this from someone who cares for the pairing, too. Thank you, love. I don't know what else to say.
