Why this must be read:
In most slash fiction, regardless of fandom, very little is said about the difficulties of having a gay relationship in an often homophobic society. Fanfic is something we do for fun, and who needs too much frightening reality? But this makes the few stories that actually deal with the problems gay people do face in real life all the more powerful and important. Kiss the Moon Goodbye is just such a story, a look at what happens to Sam's existence when he becomes the victim of a hate crime, and it is excellently written. The psychology of both the leading characters as Sam is put in a position where he has to choose between outing himself and Josh - and thus placing their political lives and the President's position in jeopardy - and failing to stand up for himself and his ideals, is beautifully portrayed, and the whole story is a wonderful read.
