Life, Not Style by Jat Sapphire (PG-13)
AIDS in the SH fandom is categorically not touched on. Even though the boys lived during the time of the beginning AIDS crisis, stories don't tend to touch on that fact. There are a few stories which break this unspoken barrier and I want to point out two in particular this week.
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/jat_sapphire/shfic.htm
Why this must be read: Starsky's mom calls and start ranting about the emerging health crisis, now known as the "gay plague." She's using this to condemn them for their lifestyle, a warning that what they're doing is wrong. And it's not like the boys are ignoring the health issue either. They're just as afraid as anyone about this mysterious illness. They've been tested, they're waiting for the results, and they won't have sex until they know they're clean.
"No regrets," Hutch said, the other words they were living by, these days.
Then Starsky did turn, and one hand grasped Hutch's belt buckle and the other was in his hair, and Starsky's mouth met his, too wild and sweet to ever taste regret. Death could not be in this kiss. Hutch defied it.
It's a scary time and they're just as lost as all the other people who are waiting, hoping, worrying that this hidden killer will take them next. Death is coming, but who will it take?
