Why this must be read:
The first scene of the pilot gives us a bare-chested Duncan MacLeod and a wickedly grinning Connor who looks him up and down and tells him with an appreciative chuckle that he's looking good. They spar and roll around in the hay and hug, their love and affection obvious. They've been as close as brothers for almost four hundred years. When Duncan loses his family in 1872, it's Connor who's there for him, close at his side. So where, in the name of all that's fannish, is the slash?

If you've ever asked yourself this question, then you need to read this story. Its strength lies in its plain, straightforward style and incisive characterization, but most of all in the honest, affecting portrayal of Immortal love between two capable, self-sufficient men who have made the choice to trust one another, to depend on one another for something fragile and vulnerable and essential. It takes place a few years after the flashbacks in "The Gathering," and the old west setting is effectively drawn in simple, confident strokes. Ever since I read this story for the first time, I've imagined that it must have happened exactly like this.
