Why this must be read: This story is so brilliantly creepy I still think about it.

The surprises of the story play out even darker than the show is willing to go. The macabre twist is on the level of the very best classic horror, like Edgar Allan Poe or tales like "The Monkey's Paw." At the same time, the plot is so logical and fits so perfectly into the world of Lost, and there is much more to this story than mere chills. There is real emotion and depth of feeling, love and loss, hope and hopelessness. The characters' reactions to the events of the story are delicate and subtle and above all, absolutely believable and real.

He held the gun out and stared at it in puzzled shock and Jack seized his chance. He took a running jump at him, knocking him to the ground. Sawyer was making choking sounds underneath him and Jack took his face in his hands and shook him. “Don’t you ever fucking do that again! They’re ghosts. OK, they’re just ghosts but we’re real. You’re real. Jesus, Sawyer!”

Sawyer’s eyes glinted in the near-darkness, his voice unrecognizable. “I’d just come back, wouldn’t I? So it don’t fuckin’ matter.”

Jack just wrapped his arms around him, not caring who might find them like that, waiting for Sawyer to cry.

He didn’t.
