Why this must be read:
Sometimes, there's nothing better than a long, drawn-out seduction story, and this one is particularly lovely and memorable. Duncan and Methos meet for the first time in a brothel in 1837, and find themselves drawn to one another despite their philosophical differences; meanwhile, Amanda has her own agenda, and it may or may not coincide with what Methos has in mind.

What fascinates me most about this story is the Methos the author portrays, so different from the Methos that we know, yet showing familiar facets below the surface. Shamelessly erotic, yet understated, the story seduces much like he does, charming and tempting the reader, coaxing you along with the intriguing glimpses she allows into Methos' complex nature, and grounding the seduction in a vividly realized time and place. Convincing details and period touches complete the spell.

Methos grabbed his robe, suddenly extremely self-conscious. He didn't want to scare the young one away. "Just a second," he replied with a stammer. Damn it, why couldn't he get his hands into the sleeves when he was really in a hurry? "I was sleeping," he said, trying more to excuse his delay than actually get dressed. He kept missing the left sleeve for some reason.

One more second and he was ready to face the Highlander. He ran his fingers through his hair, rubbed his eyes with the heels of his palm and opened the door. And nearly collapsed. Amanda's handsome young Scot was dressed impeccably, though that did not surprise him. But he'd let his hair hang loosely this time, framing his face. It made him look like a young lion, untamed and wild, or a barely cultivated barbarian. But his smile was so open and joyful, it could only belong to...

Who on earth was he trying to fool? As long as there were men like the Highlander, there were still experiences new to his world. He licked his lips, imagining he could taste the softness of the man's lips instead of his own. He'd have this one, or never rest.

I have to reread this when I have a chance. I remember, as you say, a remarkably different and attractive Methos.

I like the tragic, alien, unfathomable Methos as some authors define him; but it's also a joy to see writers play with his character and give him some range.

I read that one just long enough ago that it'll be fresh for me to read again. :-)

Oh, this story is so erotic - I mean Methos is so knowingly erotic in it...I also have a thing for jaded characters that are less jaded than they think when faced with the big L Word. This is the kind of story where, had Methos been mortal and female, he would have been the consumptive courtesan experiencing one last passion.

I just knew Amanda would win the bet. And Duncan would get a bittersweet education...
