Hunger by Rin Megnin (PG)
Fandom: NINJA TURTLES
Pairing: none, gen-fic
Author on LJ: Not that I know of
Author's website: Ria-angelo's TMNT Homepage
Why this must be read:
Just before it was cancelled (leaving us with only hints of an awesome story arc which would, sadly, never be) Archie Comics ran several flashback stories showing the Turtles as little kids. Mostly these were silly things like why they wear different colors or how they got their weapons, but the fans loved them, and it's become a popular theme in fanfic.
Rin takes a couple of the themes touched on in those flashbacks and expands upon them. For example: before the guys were old enough to start mugging the muggers – where did they get money? What about food? And how?
Splinter is easily the best part of this story. Too often he's pushed to the background as a nagging teacher, or harsh disciplinarian - or left out of the stories altogether. Rin manages to show Splinter as a concerned, harried, frustrated father of four with no one to turn to for help and very little in the way of options.
