Why this must be read: This story received a lot of attention when it was first posted, back in October 2004, and for good reason. Well-written and insightful, it shows us seven possible returns (over almost three-hundred years) to Earth for Sheppard and the Atlantis team.

Sheppard and Weir walk through the wormhole side by side, walk into the barrels of guns.

"Stand down," O'Neill's voice crackles over the intercom. Sheppard looks up to see that General O'Neill stands behind the glass, Dr. Jackson next to him. For a moment, Sheppard thinks it looks like they've been standing there for the whole of the last year, waiting for Weir to dial Earth's Gate and send a message through asking them to open the iris.

Then Colonel Carter steps up to flank O'Neill, and Sheppard snaps back to himself.
