Of Life and Living by Laurel Gardner (R)

Why this must be read: This story takes a very hard look at Grissom and focuses a lot on his inability to connect with people, even his friends, in a meaningful way. Greg has ended up stepping into Catherine's shoes as Grissom's minder after she gets married and moves away. He's the first to notice that Grissom is slowly fading into the background and growing steadily more and more depressed. Sofia steps in and essentially orders Grissom to either go into therapy or step down as supervisor. The story follows Grissom's therapy sessions and his growing relationship with Greg. It's a long, in-depth story that really shows what could happen if Grissom's left adrift for too long.

The confusion on Gil's face continued unabated, but Sofia merely leaned back in her chair. "Gil," she said, "Did you know that one of my degrees is in psychology?"

Gil nodded. "I knew that."

"Forensic psychology, to be specific," she continued, "but with it comes a fairly comprehensive understanding of the basics."

Greg listened with a nervous kind of interest. He had the feeling that this was a preamble to something, something sensitive that Gil would be uncomfortable having him hear. He wished he had left the room.

"I've had my eye on you for a while," she continued. "And I'm concerned."

"About what?"

"The signs I'm seeing. You avoid communicating. Socializing. You put in so much overtime you don't even bother to put in for it anymore. And you don't smile." The words seemed like those of a concerned friend, but the way she spoke them was brutally serious. She was coldly and precisely analyzing him, and judging by the look on his face, he didn't like it at all. "I don't know what's going on in your life, but - "

He raised a hand, palm flat, to stop her. His eyes held a warning look. "Sofia," he said, "my private life - "

"Is your own business," she finished. "But not when it interferes with your work."

Grissom's shoulders sagged. Elbows resting on the table, he clasped his hands together for a moment, then splayed them wide in a gesture of futility. "If you have some complaint..."

"I do," said Sofia. "You're not leading your team anymore."
