Why this must be read:
After the events of "Grave" in s6, Giles remains in Sunnydale to help Buffy, aid in Willow's recovery, and deal with the damage at The Magic Box. While he stays, he's surprised to learn he must also contend with Xander's resentment towards him because of the way he last left. Xander's feelings about him become a point of focus for Giles until he realizes that he cannot stop thinking about this more mature, quieter, and somewhat unfamiliar Xander.
There's a starkness to the character interactions that makes sense, given the sorrow they're experiencing and shattering situations they've come through. The story centers on Giles and Xander's changing dynamic, but it also shows us an alternate solution to canon's Giles-takes-Willow-to-England-to-heal narrative, by providing glimpses of compelling interactions throughout the ensemble. Giles and Xander come together in a way that feels natural and appropriate, a prospect of hope uncovered in the shifting circumstances caused by grief.
