Learning to Fall by Julie Fortune (NC-17)

Why this must be read:
This story manages to be exquisitely painful and very hot. Daniel's grieving after Sha're's death, and Sam is hung up on Jack. But sometimes friendhsip is enough.
He shook his head. "I left the Stargate open because I still wanted to be part of this world. That's why we didn't have a child together. Because I wasn't ready to give this up. And then ... and then when you guys came through I had to show off, Sam, I had to leave my cute little native wife behind and make myself look *smart* to *impress* you ... "
"Daniel -- "
He crushed her offer of comfort under the weight of his despair. "You were right. It's not because I lost her ... it's because I can't even really be sorry about it. I think it might be *better* this way, that at least now she's at peace and she can't be hurt anymore. How sick is that? Sha're's dead and I think it's *better*."
