White Gowns For The Moon by Kirby Crow (NC-17)

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] creedcascade and I'll be reccing for Firefly in July.

I am purely a slasher, so you'll be seeing only slash recs from me. My favourite pairing for this fandom is Mal/Simon. However, there is not a lot out there, so I'll be reccing a mixture of stories involving Mal, Simon and Jayne this month. I adore dark fiction. One of the reasons I love Firefly is that the characters live with such pain and their complicated backgrounds. It's an intelligent fandom with beautiful language and imagery.

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Jayne/Simon, Mal/Simon

Why this must be read:

This series was the first that came to mind when I thought of driving the Crack Van for this fandom. It is a favourite of mine that sticks in my mind and shiny for its beautiful darkness.

The first story in this series, The Wolf's Way was recced back in 2004. The reason I like this series is simple. It's dark and it's well written. Kirby doesn't pull punches exploring the relationship between all three men. The first story sets up the premise of a dark, intense relationship between Mal/Simon and it continues in "White Gowns For The Moon". Jayne unleashes something in Simon that Mal may not want to recognize. You see the cruelty of Mal that we saw hints of in "Serenity" the movie. Can he love someone who isn't ruined? Why bait Jayne with Simon?

Excerpt:

Then he looked closer, saw his kiss-swollen mouth and the livid red marks on his neck. Wuh de tyen, ah! He turned him loose, dropping his hands as if the contact burned him.

"Mal," Simon whispered, heartsick. "I..."

Mal heard it in his tone and looked, really looked, for the first time in weeks. Tzao gao, what's happened to him? What the hell kind of game is Jayne playing? Then Mal realized fully what a towering mistake he had made. He didn't want Simon ruined, didn't want his wings tattered up or his sweet soul marred.
