Hi! I'm
erinpoetchica and I'll be reccing West Wing fic for the month of July. I'm relatively new to the fandom, and this is my first time reccing for
crack_van, but I've enjoyed discovering some great fic, and I'm excited to be sharing it with you. I love the whole ensemble, and enjoy all sorts of pairings; I'm going to try to focus a bit on authors that I haven't seen recced much.
Why this must be read:
I discovered
arsenicjade through her Harry Potter fic, and read this, her lone West Wing story so far, when I was just starting in the fandom and had only seen a few episodes. Since then I've re-read it many, many times. I think I might be imprinted. I love this story for its outstanding depth and characterization of CJ. "Aishet Chayel" means something like "woman of valor" in Hebrew, and it's an appropriate title for a story that showcases a CJ overcoming adversity. Also, I'm a sucker for stories that make good use of the whole ensemble, and this one does, without feeling at all forced. Finally, there's a lot of lovely dialogue, which I think is particularly important in this fandom. If you're not a fan of threesomes, or of NC-17 stories (I wasn't at the time I first read this) please consider checking this one out anyway--much of it works as pure character study.
Here are a few quotes to give you a flavor of the story: In between that time and the six hours later that CJ had set the appointment up for, a bill covering stricter laws domestic abuse blew up over a last minute amendment tacked on by a senator from Georgia. The First Lady had all but written the bill and until 2:47 on that Wednesday afternoon it had seemed like it would go through without dissent.
CJ, thinking she should have known better, called the doctor to cancel. Dr. Ryun simply said, "I don’t care if an asteroid is about to hurtle into the pentagon, you'll be here on time and ready to do this procedure. I mean it." She softened then, which was the killing blow. "CJ, the sooner we catch this, if it is indeed breast cancer, the better your chances are. Please, be here."
CJ, like a good girl, promised she would be, turned off the phone, and swore. "Fuck."
Josh flung himself into her office with his customary energy. "No kidding. Do you think we could excise Georgia from the Union?"
"Probably, but it might take longer than we have to get this bill back in the game." CJ leaned back and crossed her legs. "Anything change in the last five minutes?"
"Toby's decided to take up a career as a professional assassin."
"How like him. Much more efficient than excising states."
"I'm running interference for you here."
CJ tilted her head. "He wants to kill me?"
"No, but he wants to yell at you about things you already know, like how we need you to be on target every single second today."
CJ repressed a frown. "And why are you running interference?"
Josh shrugged. "I'm feeling dashing." Whereupon he dashed himself right out of CJ's office.
"Uh huh," CJ said to nobody in particular. She picked her phone up again, and called the doctor back.

I was intrigued by your great rec and the terrific quotes you included (although I didn't make much of CJ's conversation with her doctor because I didn't have a context), but once I clicked over to the story and I saw the warning, I hit the back-button.
I don't mean to be a pain, and I know it's just a knee-jerk reaction on my part (having had chemo today), but I would have preferred some indication in your rec of what I was getting myself into...
