Why this must be read: Originally published in the zine A Love Story, this is a story about secrets. Hutch takes off in the middle of questioning and Starsky's bound and determined to find out why. But will Hutch's revelation destroy their partnership?
"Who do you think you see when you look at me?" asked Hutch, glancing quickly at Starsky, then dropping his gaze back down.
"I don't think, I know," stated Starsky, sitting his beer bottle on the coffee table and leaning toward his partner. Hutch must be wrestling with some big moral demons for him to ask this. The case they were on must have been harder on Hutch than he had realized. "You're the most good, caring, and honorable guy I've ever known. There's no one else I would trust with my life. You've always been there for me, no matter what, and I hope you know I'll always be here for you."
Hutch faintly nodded as though that was the answer he expected from Starsky. Placing his bottle next to Starsky's, he rubbed his face with his hands. "What if I told you something that changed the way you saw me, that made you realize you never knew me the way you thought you did?"
When truths come to light, it complicates things, but it also brings to the surface a couple of truths that Starsky's left long-buried, too. Will they both come to terms with the fact that the partner they thought they knew was hiding things about themselves? It's about trust and figuring out if what they have is worth fighting for.
