Why this must be read:
Xander and Angel and grief and old anger...a tense, turbulent scene is inevitable given their past conflicts. This story is unromantic, which is how I see this pairing, especially at this point in the timeline. I had a debate about whether this was more a Buffy story or an Angel one, and because of the Xander POV and the roots of this relationship that are from the early days of Buffy, I decided it was OK to rec it for BtVS. Great Xander voice in this, but the Angel protrayal actually works better for me; he's such a still, iceberg character most of the time, even if he also has an inner dork that occasionally shows.
