Why this must be read:

The Legolas--Gimli relationship has spawned quite a bit of 'first-time' fanfiction, but the quality is very mixed. 'They Say of the Elves' is a stylishly written vignette which uses the genre intelligently to examine the preconceptions and fears of the two races. I'm very surprised this hasn't been recommended here before: it's a real classic in the fandom, perfectly in character for both elf and dwarf. A teensy quotation to give you a flavour of the piece:

"You know what they say of the Elves, that they'll tumble you soon as look at you; seducers, coquettes, you'll wake with only a handful of leaves and a sweet taste in your mouth."

I've read very little LotR fic, but this is a story that I remember. It's lovely and bittersweet and funny and angsty, all at the same time. Good stuff. I haven't read it in a long while, so thanks for reccing it!
