"Splinter" by Yahtzee and Rheanna (R)
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: some Angelus/Darla
Authors' homepage: The Chicago Loop - Yahtzee
Palimpset - Rheanna
Authors on LJ:
yahtzee63 and
rheanna27
Why this must be read:
Yahtzee and Rheanna are sort of the all-star dream team of fanfiction, specializing in long, twisting-plot AU pieces with spot-on characterization. "Splinter" is cleverly tucked into the end of Angel S2, between the moment when Angel & co. leave Pylea and when they arrive back on Earth. It pulls in all the threads of its season - the rift between Angel and his friends, Darla and the consequences of her interference, and the very concept of who Angel is - how he sees himself and how the others see him. Plus, the plot leans crucially on aspects of the Buffy S5 finale, and we aren't spared the heartbreak of Angel coming home to that bit of news, either.
This is fabulous. Perfect character voices all around, including a great Fred characterization, lots of nail-biting tension, and touching moments.
Splinter
"Listen; there's a hell
Of a good universe next door; let's go."
