Why this must be read:
Hunting Season showed Ray and Fraser as very competitive over the attentions of Maggie MacKenzie. This fic is from Maggie's POV and the fic's scenes slot well around the edges of the scenes we saw. As well as keeping the tone of the episode throughout we get to see Maggie - her awkwardness in the city, her observations - and how she interprets them in view of Ray and Fraser's behaviour as well as the context of the case itself - the controlled desperation in questioning the wheelman really works.
So, great voices for all three and neat use of Maggie's outsider view of the weirdness of Fraser and Ray. Ray's focus on Maggie in particular is just that right side of awkwardness for her. Especially contrasting how much Fraser must have adapted with Maggie's newness to Chicago. Also, dead!Bob brings the humour, just as straightforward as always.
Fraser harrumphed loud enough to be heard from the street. Ray spun around with instinctive, if grudging, obedience and escorted her back towards the doorway, his hand hovering again and again near her elbow, but not quite making the final grab. When she glanced over at him, his eyes were on his partner again. Pulled like a magnet.
"You've worked with Constable Fraser for some time, haven't you."
His eyes flicked back to her, still wary, then the momentary glimpse of the real man disappeared down under the same mouth-breathing, hypnotized look he'd been giving her since they met. He walked backward and ignored the question. "A girl Mountie. That's really something, you know? You're like a dream come true."
She raised her eyebrows and looked away, wondering if he ever really listened to himself.
"Fightin' bad guys, breaking glass, never getting dirty... like superheroes. Fraser let me wear his hat once."
