Why this must be read:
Unspoken starts out describing a long, highly charged sexual encounter between Chris, Vin and Buck but ends up detailing issues of intimacy, trust and belonging. While all three men are enthusiastic participants in an established threesome there are still undercurrents of doubt running through even the most welcoming kiss or touch. It's interesting how the one who questions their relationship the least is also the most observant and how the least demanding one carries the deepest need.
But there were times when Vin would see it, sense it...the two of them -- Chris and Vin -- reading each other so easily, only not always correctly, because Vin would sense those fleeting doubts of Chris', would catch that reassurance from Buck and once more think he was here on a sufferance of sorts. Like it wasn't three, but two and one, with him the odd man out, the fresh meat, and Buck could almost see him pull back, shut himself off, throw himself into lovemaking or cooking or running skips as a way not to think about it at all. Half expecting to come home one day and find it wasn't anymore.
Maygra captures both the elbows and knees awkwardness of a threesome and also how difficult and wonderful it is to love more than one person. The last image of Buck and Vin is amazingly sweet and heartrending.
