Why this must be read: Because long AJ/Lance stories are incredibly rare, and good long stories even rarer. Because it's a quiet and understated story about the end of one relationship and the beginning of another, without over-the-top angst or excessive emotional wallowing.
That said this story does have a couple of problems that might put some readers off. One is the rather idiosyncrathic punctuation, and the other is the strange way the text is broken up into paragraphs. To me these two things are however easily outweighed by the quality of the story itself.
Excerpt: They were so close together that Lance could practically taste AJ's skin. He could feel AJ's hand pressing against his back trapped between his shirt and his bare skin. He pushed closer into AJ's body feeling the heat of flesh under sweat soaked fabric.
He wasn't sure what he was doing out here on the dance floor practically melting into AJ McLean. He had been leaning against the bar watching the crowd, pretending not to watch Justin, and then there had been a voice in his ear.
'Dance with me.'
He had recognized the voice this time. He had turned slowly and found himself face to face with AJ, who had been a lot closer than he'd expected. He had intended to say no, to leave AJ and the memories he conjured up behind. Instead he had found himself saying.
'Why?' AJ had smiled then a slow smile touched with a hint of challenge. He hadn't answered. He had just grabbed Lance's hand and said into Lance's ear.
'They kicked the reporters out, come dance with me.'
It sounded so simple when AJ said it. And it had been surprisingly easy to let AJ pull him obscenely close and start them moving in a down and dirty rhythm. It hadn't been at all awkward the way first dances usually were. There had been no confusion about where to put his hands or about how to move with AJ. It had just worked.
