The River Styx by Estevana Rey (PG-13)

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN ~ Old West
Pairing: Gen.
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Lady Angel's M7 Library
Why this must be read:

Vin tracks Lon Porter into a stretch of land known as the badlands for its desert heat and its treacherous terrain of hardened lava. He finds Porter, dead at the bottom of a deep hole when Porter and his horse broke through the brittle surface. The ground crumbles under Vin’s feet and while he hits the bottom with only scrapes he begins a long ordeal for his life and sanity. The days pass with both heat and rain and the slowly decomposing body of Porter that becomes animated as Vin struggles with memories of his mothers death. When Vin is finally found he is a shell of his former self who has only fractured memories of what he survived with no way of telling anyone why he lives in fear or why he cannot move on from it. His time in the hole is described in nightmarish detail so that it’s very believable that someone as strong willed as Vin would fall victim to it. There’s a strong emphasize on Chris and Vin’s friendship but all of the Seven are featured and utilized wisely. Their sense of confusion and helplessness at being unable to restore Vin is palpable and heartrending as is the obvious connection they feel to him and his pain.
