Why this must be read: because this story rings true in every sense. Yes, it is an Earthside A/U where John and Elizabeth were married and had a child, but that isn't the focus of the story. As when the story opens Elizabeth has died, leaving John to raise their child alone. No, the focus of this story is about John. It is about his grief, his love for his daughter and how falling for Rodney has changed his life - for the better.
An incredible moving story that to me sums up what death, living and love is about. The sequel is just as good. I've listed them both here.
