Why this must be read:
Larry can be a great character to write, he's dryly funny and something of a grouch and a man of few (pointed, often obscene) words. His sidelong approach toward Edge in this story is so believable, so very Larry, that this story is a standout humour fic, driven by character rather than situation. Edge, by the same token, is totally the kind of person who would do Sudoku puzzles. The really hard ones. And get them right. The interaction is wonderfully in character, if you ever look at this band together, they are very casual and comfortable with one another, long years of being together erasing any sort of personal boundaries. Spicedrum does a lovely job of conveying this easy familiarity, in the dialogue, the scenario, but also in Edge's knowing exactly when he needs to stop teasing Larry and start handling him gently. It's got the characterisation, it's got the funny and it's got that simple, casual sweetness and instinctive caring I tend to love in this fandom.
It had taken him forever to come to the realization, and once he had, he hadn't known whether to shout it from the rooftops or try a more subtle approach. He'd opted for the latter and failed miserably.
He remembered too late an argument he'd had with Bono years before. Larry had been slightly altering the rhythm every fifth bar as a way of showing that he didn't like some song they were recording. Bono's timing kept getting thrown off, and they couldn't get the track right. Three frustrating days later, Bono'd figured out what was going on and brought holy hell down on his head. Larry yelled back that the song was shite, and why did it take three days to notice anyway, and Bono had observed that Larry trying to be subtle was about as noticeable as the movement of a glacier. Larry had spat back that it wouldn't have been a problem if Bono's head wasn't made of wood. Punches were thrown, and an amp and two guitars were destroyed. The only lasting result of that fight was the tradition of Larry pegging Bono in the side of the head with a flying drumstick when he wanted to note his displeasure.
Now that he thought of it, though, Larry realized that Bono'd had a point. More times than not, when he was trying to be diplomatic, nobody caught on. Larry ended up losing his patience and just blurting out what it was he was trying to hint at.
Maybe what Larry needed to do was hit Edge upside the head with a drumstick.
