"Into the Fold" by Neoinean (PG)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Author on LJ: None known
Author Website: None known, but her stories are archived at Fanfiction.net
Character: Duncan MacLeod, Richie Ryan, Tessa Noel
Why this must be read: In the first episode of Highlander, Richie Ryan is a punk kid who gets caught breaking into MacLeod's antique store. By the second episode, Richie is living and working at the store. Wouldn't you like to know how that happened?
This is the first in a series of stories by Neoinean focused on the relationships between Richie, Tessa, and Duncan in the first and second seasons of Highlander. Duncan finds Richie running scared and wounded from a gang of teenagers. He brings him to the hospital and begins to take more of an interest in the pre-Immortal boy he promised Connor he'd keep an eye on. Overlook the occasional typos. Read this story for the slow building of trust and the realistic details, like the pain of riding a bus with stitches and eating peanut butter sandwiches when you can't afford anything else.
“Does Richard have any family coming for him?” Duncan asked. Powell sighed, exasperated.
“He turned eighteen a few days ago,” said Detective Anderson, speaking for the first time. “He's no longer a ward of the state so his DSS and juvie records are sealed and according to his caseworker his last foster family dropped off the radar months ago.”
“Months ago?” Duncan was shocked. “Then who picked him up from the station after he broke into my store?”
“You know how under funded and understaffed the DSS is. His caseworker had to authorize his release over the phone because she couldn't get to the station to pick him up. He walked out on his own.”
“Because you refused to press charges,” Powell added unnecessarily.
“So you're telling me he has no family,” Duncan declared.
“None that we've been able to locate,” said Anderson. “The DSS has sealed his record so we don't even know the name of his most recent foster family and now that he's eighteen his caseworker can't even speak to us without a court order.”
“So no one else knows or cares that he nearly died today,” Duncan realized, speaking mostly to himself as he voiced his thoughts aloud.
“No one but you,” Anderson conceded.
Read Into the Fold and (IMHO) Neoinean's finest work, the heart-breakingly real WIP Christmas story Seeking Shelter.
