Why this fic must be read: It's a fic about Shepherd Book! Seriously, there seems to be too few pieces about the good shepherd, an enigmatic and shadowed figure to say the least. This fic is a nice exploration of the character we really seemed to know the least about, because everything we know is a guess, a hint, a speculation. Maystone takes those glimpses and brings us into the thoughts and conflicts of the quiet figure of Shepherd Book, without stepping away from the reality of the character.
Book was a man attuned to the nuances of irony. When casting about for a new identity - a new name for a new man - his quick-fire mind rested on Book without any conscious thought at all. It just appeared like a genie unbidden. Book. The Good Book. Oh, the irony appealed to him - to his intellectual vanity, to his sense of self-mockery, to his slowly flowering hope.
