Borrowed Time by Estevana Rey (PG)
Fandom: MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: None. Gen-fic
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a
Why this fic must be read:
Borrowed Time is one of the WWII AUs I mentioned earlier th is month. Estevana Rey has put the Seven into a B-17 and sent them off to fight the Germans. The fic is well-written and the characters sound like themselves, especially JD who is the new guy on the crew.
Unfortunately for the Seven, they have a problem: they've suffered heavy damage, the plane is probably not going to make it back home in one piece, the landing gear is stuck and JD is trapped. Chris gives the order for the others to jump, but we all know how well that goes over.
The story is pretty long - about 100k - so give yourself a little while to get through it. And don't forget to drop a line to the author if you enjoyed the story.
The best case scenario was also the worst case scenario. They'd bring the plane in and she'd hold together as she slid across the tarmac, leaving behind her a trail of pieces from the shattered turret and a short, red smear. Everyone would know what the red was but no one would say it out loud. Maybe someone would have the stomach to collect a few slivers of bone or a tooth or a lock of hair - and the dog tags, which, God Bless 'em, survived practically anything. Then they'd put it all in a coffin and pretend it was a real body and maybe even send it back to the States with JD's name on it.
Or, maybe they'd just hose off the runway.
