Why this must be read:
This is, plain and simple, a Feel Good story. This is one I turn to when I am in need of comfort. The perfect read for a day when we offer thanks for what we have.
A random encounter in a shabby neighborhood brings out what Napoleon calls "the white knight" in Illya and sparks a small mystery for Napoleon. Where is Illya's coat and why does he leave Napoleon's cozy bed to go shopping? What do an Oxford biochemist, a heroine of the Great Patriotic War and a life of Thoreau-like simplicity have to do with a Thrush stakeout? All it takes is one small act of compassion to tie them all together.
Napoleon and Illya are happily, securely together in this story, no relationship angst, always a big plus for me. Also, Kellie has created memorable characters in Masha and Joe, noble human beings tangled in an uncomfortable web of administrivia and legalities.
A beautiful story about nobility, character, pride and compassion, about what is and isn't important in life; a fabulous, guaranteed-to-make-you-happy reading experience. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do.
